Corporate Coaching and Motivation

by Jim Guerci on June 22, 2009

One of the goals of corporate coaching is to instill determination and positive energy in the people being coached. In other words, corporate coaching increases the power of motivation and charges the battery of inner drive. Motivation can be defined as a state of mind that drives one into action. According to psychologists, capability, acceptance and independence drive human beings to a great extent.

Richard Florida, in his book the Rise of the Creative Class, has talked about a group of about 38 million people who tried to do novel things by using knowledge. Florida used the result of the survey conducted by an IT newsweekly in 2001 to point out challenge, flexibility, stability and money as the four major factors responsible for motivation. The survey demonstrated that:

  • 67% of the people surveyed found motivation in challenge
  • 53% found motivation in flexibility
  • 43.5% found motivation in stability
  • 38.5% found motivation in money

About 20% of the people surveyed identified training, job atmosphere, recognition and casual attire as major motivating factors.

Executive coaching plays a significant role in motivating people in the following ways:

  • Energize: People communicate and listen more and also accept challenges.
  • Encourage: Corporate coaching empowers employees with the will to do things. These people can then provide support to their peers, as well as recognize talent and a good job done.
  • Exhort: Employees feel inspired to sacrifice and build a strong experience.
